Year 1

Welcome to Year 1! This is an exciting year of learning where curiosity and creativity really begin to flourish. In our classrooms, it is our aim to create a positive, nurturing environment where every child develops a genuine love of learning that will stay with them as they grow.

During the year, we engage our learners through exciting lessons and experiences that spark curiosity, imagination and encourage active participation. Some of the exciting topics we will explore include finding out about toys from the past and famous explorers, helping children to understand how the world has changed and how people have shaped it. In Geography, we learn about what life is like in the UK before broadening our horizons to discover the vibrant city of Shanghai. We will also be super scientists and learn about topics such as ‘Sensitive Bodies’ where we explore our different senses, ‘Seasonal Changes’ and explore plants and animals.

Alongside our exciting topics, children continue to focus on, and develop, their early reading skills through daily phonics lessons. Towards the end of the year they will take part in the national Phonics Screening Check to celebrate the progress they have made.

Overall, Year 1 is a busy, fun-filled year full of discovery and learning!
