Newsletters 2021-22 Friday 24th June No.19

Deanshanger Primary School (@DeanshangerS) | Twitter

It is the time of year when there is a final push for progress, writing reports, planning sports days, end-of-year events, saying goodbye to our Y6 children, welcoming a huge group of Reception children to the school, saying thank you and goodbye to highly regarded staff and arranging a new staffing plan!

Next Thursday, the children in Reception to Y5, will be having a 'going-up' afternoon to meet their new teacher for the year ahead, voting on a new class name (on the theme of story characters) and getting to know more about the learning for their new school year. They will be finding out their new class teachers on Tuesday. The Y6 children have also got transition sessions planned with their new secondary schools.

Whilst our class staffing plan for September is not quite complete, this is attached to this newsletter for your information. Where there is a gap at the moment, information will be shared as soon as possible so that the class currently in Year 3 meet their new teacher before the end of the summer term. The support team working hard around the class teams remains the same as now.

The sports days are coming up and we are pleased that these can be back to the format that we know and love with just a couple of tweaks.  You are warmly invited in for these events and are also welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy with your family on the field at lunchtime before heading home. Mr Paragreen will be compering the days again - can you believe this year will be his 40th year of doing this for us!!!! 40 years!!! WOW

Both sports days will start at 9am. Bring a picnic rug or chairs, sun cream, waterproofs and refreshments for whatever the weather might have in store.

At the end of this academic year, we bid a sad and fond farewell to Ms. Nyree McKenzie, one of our Reception teachers. Ms. McKenzie has taught many of the children in the school ensuring that they have had very firm foundations for their learning as they have progressed through the school. Nyree is hugely dedicated and hard-working. Her classroom environment is creative and inspiring. Nyree has contributed much to our phonics journey as a school. Who could forget the many fancy dress outfits and rhymes to teach phonics and her beautiful ballet dancing below.

Ms McKenzie we will miss you and wish you every success for the future...

We will also be saying goodbye to Miss Georgia Whitaker at the end of the school year. Georgia is currently teaching in Year 4, but has motivated and enthralled students in Year 5 and 6 previously. Georgia is a highly creative and energetic teacher. She can often be found enjoying a football match at lunchtime, developing our outside science garden, entertaining us all or inspiring the rest of the staff team to teach more science.

Georgia will be really missed and we wish her all the very best in her future role.

Mrs. Val Wright has been supporting children at the school since 1998! During this time, she has provided invaluable support for hundreds of children and lots of teachers too with her nurturing support and great sense of humour.

Val has decided that it is time to hang up her lanyard and retire from school life but I have no doubt whatsoever at she will continue to be extremely active and be busier than ever.

Val, thank you so much for dedicating so much time and energy to our school and positively impacting so many lives as a result.

Naser Naser has been our highly valued site supervisor for a year.  Sadly, Naser left us today to move on to a new venture closer to home. We are extremely grateful for his hard work, kindness and support and wish him all the very best.

We look forward to welcoming Mr. Stuart Harris to the team (in the site supervising role) very shortly.

Please note that the crossing will be unsupervised for the time being and great care should be taken.

Huge congratulation to the latest Sunflower Award recipients

The latest Sunflower Award newsletter can be found here.

The PTA Summer Raffle tickets are ready to go and will be coming home with your chidlren on Monday if you didn't receive them today.

As the PTA funds support so many 'nice to haves' in the school, it would be lovely if you could help sell as many as possible to family, friends and neighbours etc. There are various amazing prizes on offer including a £100 shopping voucher for Afternoon Tea for 2 and a hamper.

Thank you very much to the PTA for arranging this and to you all for supporting where you can

Assessments

As you may all be aware many of your children have been taking assessments over the past couple of weeks. In the early weeks of May, our Year 6 children sat their Key Stage 2 SATS (Standard Assessment Tasks). Following this, our Year 2 children have sat their SATS and Year 1 children have undertaken their phonics screening assessment. This week children in Years 3, 4 and 5 have been completing their assessments. We are also still assessing our youngest children in Reception. The main areas that the assessments are focusing on are: maths, reading, writing, science and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). You will shortly be receiving your child's end-of-year report which will give you details of how well your child did in these assessments and areas that they need to develop to improve further.

All the children have done incredibly well to participate in these assessments and have shown real determination and resilience. If you would like to find out more, please speak or email your child's class teacher. They will be happy to help.

Racism Workshop at DPS

It was a real shame that no one was able to join the Zoom meeting that we planned last week to talk about racism and how we can support our children and the wider community, to be fully inclusive and proactive in this very important area.  It is an area that is crucial to focus on and one that we hope to reschedule for another date.

Our timings for the school day are slightly changing for September 2022 and beyond. In line with government directives about the length of the school day, we will be extending the school day for all children with a start time of 8.45am and a pick-up time of 3.25pm.

The gate will still open at 8.40am in the morning for KS2.

Chair of Governor Updates

St Begh's Catholic Junior School - Governors

Mr. David Aaronson stood down from being our Chair of Governors at the last meeting. David has been a school governor for over 30 years and a Chair for the last three! What a phenomenal achievement. The impact he has had on the school during this time is obviously very extensive.

We are indebted to Mr. Aaronson for his professional and dedicated commitment to the school. He is well known and respected by the staff, the children and the whole community as he has supported in so many roles. David has been an active member of the BNTO, has joined nearly every assembly recently either via Zoom or in person, supported our growing understanding of Judaism, visited classes on a regular basis, had catch-up meetings regarding SEND with our SENCo, Mrs. Natalie Parsonson, led sessions at the village library for our Reception children and much more. We owe him a huge ...

Although standing down from governance, David will continue to be involved in school life.

Mr Peter Nickoll is now our Acting Chair of Governors.

Father’s Day Event

Huge thanks to Dan Coroy, Sarah Conroy and Michael Robins for supporting us with a great BBQ to recognise Father's Day. It has been a couple of years since we have been able to run this event, so it was very special to get it back up and running.

We recognise that some of you did have to wait a long time, and for this we apologise, but hopefully, the quality of the burger made up for it! They did such an amazing job keeping up with huge amount of dads and dad figures.
