Dear Reception Families,
Welcome back! We hope you had a restful Easter break and are ready for a busy, fun-filled Summer Term. This final term in Reception is always one of the most exciting, with lots of special events, hands-on learning experiences, and the children continuing to grow in independence and confidence.
What We’re Learning This Term 📚
Our learning this term will be rich, active, and full of discovery as we prepare for the transition into Year 1.
- Understanding the World 🌍
We’ll be exploring the natural world through real-life experiences, including visits from animals, planting and growing, and learning about different habitats and life cycles. These experiences help children to observe closely, ask questions, and build respect and curiosity about living things. - Communication and Language 🗣️
Children will continue developing their speaking and listening skills through storytelling, role-play, and class discussions. They will be encouraged to ask and answer questions, explain their thinking, and build their vocabulary through meaningful interactions. - Phonics & Early Reading 🔤📖
We are continuing with the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. Children will keep practising their blending and segmenting skills and develop fluency and confidence in reading. Please keep reading daily at home—it really does make a difference! - Mathematics ➕🔢
Using the White Rose Maths approach, we will be securing understanding of numbers to 10 and beyond, including doubling, halving, sharing, and understanding patterns. We’ll use practical, hands-on activities to help children problem-solve and talk about their reasoning. - Personal, Social and Emotional Development 💛
This term is all about building independence and emotional readiness for Year 1. We’ll be focusing on teamwork, resilience, confidence, and preparing children for the transition into their next class with opportunities to meet their new teachers and ‘Going Up’ experiences.
Reminders for the Term Ahead
- Be Weather Ready! 🌧️☀️
Please send your child in with both a coat and a sunhat. All items must be clearly labelled (more than just initials, please). When it’s sunny, apply long-lasting suncream at home before school. - Daily Essentials 🎒
Don’t forget book bags, Pupil Planners, and water bottles (water only, please) each day. We will continue to visit the school library on Wednesday afternoons, so please ensure your library books are returned each week.
- Forest School 🌲
If your child took their wellies or Forest School kit home, please return them to school. - No Toys or Valuables 🧸
Please help us by keeping toys, jewellery, makeup, and valuable items at home. - Medication 💊
If needed during the day, please take all medication to the school office and complete the necessary form. - Animal Visitors 🐾
We’ll be welcoming some furry and feathered friends to school this term! Please let us know if your child has any allergies or sensitivities we should be aware of in advance.
