Deanshanger Primary School - Newsletter 9   17-12-2020

What a term! Looking back to September, I must admit it felt that we all had a mountain to climb to manage and minimise the risks of covid, settle your amazing children back into school routines and, of course, take their learning forward. It is with great delight that we can all congratulate ourselves on doing it!

It has been a big team effort and, by everyone following the risk assessment, we have had an almost 'regular' term of learning with strong individual progress, whole-school improvement, and, most importantly, happy children with lots of special experiences! Special thanks to the governing body for their unwavering support and the PTA - they continue to provide lots of special touches to school life.

Covid has really impacted on our school community and there have been some very sad losses. Our thoughts and prayers extend to all of you that have really suffered since March. More than ever, I would like to wish you all the best holiday ever and all the very best for a healthy and happy 2021 - my word, we need it!

To bring some extra cheer, I'd like to share some amazing videos with you. Like several school activities, things have had to look slightly different this year, but they have still gone ahead.

Whether your child is in Mr. Larcombe's outside choir or not, I would really recommend enjoying their video too.

Finally, please also see an extremely unpolished but heartfelt message from the staff at our last staff meeting.

A massive thank you to the PTA for funding (and wrapping) a gift for every child in the school today! A very generous and thoughtful gesture.

School Spelling Bee

This week our students have had their Spelling Bee. It was different to previous years as we asked the children to participant in their year group bubbles but it was still a fantastic competition with some tough spelling for our children to overcome. DPS Team Updates 2020

Our SENCo, Julie Boddington, is very sadly leaving us today. Julie has been a fantastic member of our school family and will be sorely missed. Julie was a class teacher from 2016 and then took on the role of SENCo in August 2019. I'm sure you all join us in wishing Julie every success in the future. We would like to thank her for all of her dedication to our school.

Good luck Mrs Boddington

We would also like to wish Charlene Gibbs all the very best as she begins her maternity leave and say a huge thank you to Carolina Pizzino for her hard work and dedication to her cleaning role.

Welcome to DPS 2021

As we move forward into January we would like to extend a very warm welcome to Natalie Wilmott our new SENCo. Natalie has had a handover from Julie Boddington and will be in close contact with families as appropriate.

We would also like to welcome Jacquie Johnstone to the team as a Midday supervisor and providing additional support in FS and to Nikki Warner as a new cleaner - welcome aboard!

The School Nursing text service ChatHealth will remain open over Christmas

You can send a text via ChatHealth for confidential and anonymous advice on all kinds of health issues, like emotional health, sexual health, bullying, healthy eating and any other general health concerns. This service is available for young people aged 11-19 and the parents or carers of primary age pupils.

There will be a school nurse on duty from 9 am to 4 pm each day, except weekends and bank holidays.

Just text 07507 329600 or Click Here for more information about support available.

In the last two weeks of this term, we booked Barrie from The Punctuation Show to lead fun and engaging sessions with children in Y2-6. Barrie brings punctuation to life in a really enjoyable way and the children seemed to really learn from them and enjoy them.

Barrie is leading 'Live Christmas Special' via his Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thepunctuationshow on Wednesday 23rd December at 10:00 am.  Event details here - https://fb.me/e/1ZQQwth14  It might be something that you would like to join from home.

A huge thank you to our Fresh Start team and midday supervising team for preparing, cooking and serving delicious Christmas lunches to over 300 children yesterday - quite an undertaking!

I/we can't thank you enough for the generosity shown in our latest appeal for food donations to go to families in our community and to the Towcester Foodbank. Your kindness has made a huge difference to many families. In addition, we have had Christmas cakes donated by a family and Christmas hampers on behalf of the Parish Council - WOW!

An initiative that we have started the process for, is having a community fridge in the former kiln room. For further information about this exciting project, please click here.  We will keep you up to date with our progress in the new year.

Governors update from Mr David Aaronson, Chair of Governors

Last week was taken up with a Curriculum meeting where we received a presentation on data linked to expected figures on Writing, Reading, SPAG- Spelling and Grammar—and Maths.  As Governors these figures are an important guide to how the children are performing in these areas’.

We also assigned Governors as key leads in every school year so that they can establish a positive working relationship with the teachers and children in that year.

We also had a Full Governing Body meeting that same evening and again we had a full agenda with committee meetings feedback, Head teacher report, School Improvement Plan and ratification of recent policies

The previous Friday there had been a socially distanced Learning walk with the LA, New Bradwell School and a Parent Governor. These are an important part of our role as Governor’s allowing us to see how the school is performing against expectations and actions

Finally last Thursday the Head and I met via Zoom with the LA and New Bradwell School to talk through the progress we had made against a various set of goals and actions. It was a rigorous and challenging time, but both the Head and I were able to give a positive and confident message of our journey moving forward and our and the school's commitment to the future.

These walks and meetings have all required a completely different approach during the present Covid 19 situation and I want to thank everyone Staff, pupils, Governors and parents/carers for their energy, hard work, commitment and support throughout this challenging time.

I would like to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and, hopefully, less stressful New Year - stay safe and well.
