Newsletters 2023-2024  no. 19   24th May 2024

It has been a very busy and action-packed half-term. The information shared below will give you a bit of a taster of school life, while the calendar below also outlines the special events still to come in the current school year! It's no wonder that the children and staff are ready for a bit of a rest before we enjoy the final term of the school year.

It's the time of year when we are very much in the 'here and now' and also making plans for the new school year. Lots of information will be shared with you shortly in terms of our staffing plans and class groupings etc.

To our hard-working and dedicated staff, our very supportive and community-spirited families and our wonderful students, I hope you all have a lovely half-term break. Recharge the batteries well, as I can guarantee the next half-term will be as full on as ever!

Thank you very much to the parents who joined Mr Pennington for our Parent Action Group (PAG) meeting earlier this week. Although it was a small group, the discussion was extremely useful in guiding us towards a new 'learning contract'. More information will follow shortly.

We are lucky to have had so many sporting opportunities for our children in the past few weeks. Our athletes are great advocates for PE and sport at our school and we are all very proud of them. There are many more exciting sporting activities to come!

Quicksticks Hockey

Our Year 3 and 4 children took part in a Quicksticks hockey competition hosted by Northamptonshire Sport at Towcestrians Hockey Club. The children put in an amazing performance, competing in different skill stations and matches against lots of other schools. They finished a very strong 4th overall - a massive well done to all of those involved! Please see the Summer 1 sporting gallery for all the photos - https://www.deanshangerprimary.co.uk/gallery/?pid=3&gcatid=2

John Hellins Friendly Match

Our Year 5/6 girls and boys football teams played a friendly match against John Hellins Primary School. Both teams played amazing football, showed great communication and teamwork and were victorious in both matches. Thank you to John Hellins for taking part and we look forward to the rematch in late June.

MK Dons Tournament

Our Year 5/6 children took part in a primary schools tournament at Stadium MK. They were lucky enough to play on the first team pitch, get a tour of the stadium and meet Donnie and Mooey. All the children showed great determination and teamwork throughout the entire day. We look forward to working with MK SET for more events next year. Please see the gallery for all the photos - https://www.deanshangerprimary.co.uk/gallery/?pid=3&gcatid=2&albumid=1169

Striking/Fielding Festival

Children from Year 2-6 took part in a striking/fielding festival hosted by Northamptonshire Sport at DPS. This festival focused on promoting children's participation and awareness of sports such as tennis, rounders, cricket and baseball. I would like to say well done to all the children for showing great resilience through the torrential rain! They all showed great batting and fielding skills and there are definitely some future sport stars! Please see the Summer 1 sporting gallery for all the photos - https://www.deanshangerprimary.co.uk/gallery/?pid=3&gcatid=2

WOW Travel Tracker

Our new walk to school initiative has been a success so far! Around 75% of our pupils are currently using an active mode of transport to get to school every morning which is fantastic to see! A reminder that children need to record 3 active trips in a week for the whole month to earn a WOW travel tracker badge and 10 dojos as a reward. The first batch of rewards will be handed to the children during our celebration assembly on the first week back after half term. Thank you for all your support with helping the children be as active as possible and contributing to their 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

Sports for Schools Athlete Event

We are extremely excited to be working with Sports for Schools for a sponsored athlete event. GB athlete, Sean Rose, is visiting our school for a fun fitness circuit and Q&A session. Please see the email sent to all families on Wednesday 22nd June for all the details! There will be further communications to come. If you have any questions regarding the event please email:

Partnership for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINs)

We are part of the Partnership for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) Project. Please support this project by completing the parent survey. Your responses will help us to identify areas of strength and development and will help to shape the support we receive from the project.

The project will work on:

· Developing confidence and expertise in supporting neurodiversity in the classroom

· Improving the school environment to support neurodiverse children to engage in learning

· Develop an inclusive culture that improves efficacy of other interventions

· Strengthening partnerships between parents and school.

We are hoping to hold a parent coffee morning where you will be able to find out more about the project. We will set a date for this soon.

You can access the survey here: https://wnvp.surveysparrow.com/s/pins-parent-carer-survey/tt-IsxCT

The responses are sent directly to the Voices in Partnership.

Thank you for your participation and we look forward to sharing with your our progress throughout this project.

Fruity Friday

Chefarone Fruit Bowl - Countertop Metal Fruit Basket - Black Fruit Bowls Vintage Style - Keeps Fruits and Veg Fresh - 26 x 26 x 12 cm (Black)

Due to popular demand, we have reinstated Fruity Fridays!

On the dates shown, the children are warmly encouraged to bring in a fruit item from home. The year group will do some creative thinking and turn the items into a healthy treat and they will be sold at the end of the school day to all families. The money raised goes directly to the year group to buy any 'nice to haves'  they have voted on.

Year 6, 2, 5 and 3  have started the sales extremely well, providing lots of tasty and healthy treats.

Safeguarding and Mental Health Awareness Week

Keeping our children safe online is super important. At Deanshanger, we take several steps to make sure our children can enjoy the internet safely while they're at school. Here’s how we do it:

Smart Filters: We use smart internet filters to block any inappropriate websites. This way, the classes can only access safe, educational content.

Digital Safety Lessons: Our students learn about online safety as part of their regular class computing lessons. We teach them about privacy, the dangers of sharing personal info, and how to deal with cyberbullying (according to their age).

Supervised Browsing: All staff keep a close eye on children when they're online. Whether they’re using computers or tablets, there’s always someone watching them closely to ensure they are safe and using the equipment for the intended activity.

We believe in working together: On the school website, there are lots of resources and tips for you as parents to help you keep your children safe online at home, too. In addition, we work closely with families when advice is requested or when, unfortunately, challenges have been faced with internet use - this is most often in regard to social media platforms used outside school.

If you have any questions or need more info, feel free to reach out.

If you have any safeguarding concerns at any time, please be sure to pass them on.

Father's Day BBQ Lunch

 Friday 14th June

Bookings are now open for you to join us for our annual Father's Day lunch. The BBQ lunch is £5. The children will already have eaten, so the BBQ is for dads and dad figures only. As always, we'll be hoping for glorious sunshine.

You are all warmly invited to join us at 12 pm, but please then spend time chilling on the school field and playing until your ticket is called.

If your youngest child in the school is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, you will receive a yellow ticket as you sign in on the day meaning that you will be served a burger between 12 and 12.25 pm. Please don't join the BBQ line if you don't have a yellow ticket. When yellow ticket adults have had their lunch, they are welcome to stay and play until 1pm.

If your youngest child in the school is in Year 3 or 4, you will receive a green ticket as you sign in on the day meaning that you can have fun with your child/ren until 12.25 and will then be served a burger between 12.25 and 12.45 pm. Please don't join the BBQ line at 12.25pm if you don't have a green ticket. When green ticket adults have had their lunch, you are more than welcome to stay and play until 1 pm.

If your youngest child in the school is in Year 5 or 6, you will receive a blue ticket when you sign in on the day. Feel free to come in at 12 pm, but you won't be called for the BBQ lunch until 12.45pm.

If you are not having the BBQ lunch but want to come in to 'play' only, we look forward to seeing you too. Please ensure that you sign in as you arrive. You won't receive a coloured ticket.

To complete a whole school display for this year's Pride event in Deanshanger (on Saturday 15th June), we are keen to borrow three dress makers' mannequins. Do you know anyone that might have one and might be open to us borrowing them?

Our display will focus on what makes us proud about ourselves and our village.

Thank you

We like to advertise local events in the newsletter, and particularly those of close relevance to our school and local community. Former student, Emily Penwell, is taking the lead role in the dance concert below!  Congratulations to Emily - we are very proud of you.

Plans for Terry's summer holiday are yet to be made if you are keen to have him for all or some of the holiday.

Thank you
