Newsletters 2023-2024  no. 16   29th March 2024

We've had a relatively short term, but it has certainly been a very busy one with lots of rich and diverse learning opportunities taking place in the school.

I would like to share my thanks to the staff, PTA, governors, and Trust, for working in partnership and providing the right platform for the children to thrive and have lots of fun too! School staff go over and above on a daily basis and, with dedicated support from all other stakeholders, our collective efforts are having a very positive impact on your amazing children.  Their relentless energy and 'yes I can' attitude makes a huge difference.

This newsletter shares some of the school events on top of the everyday teaching and learning. While giving a window into the world of DPS, it might also show why we are all ready for a rest and a chance to recharge the batteries in readiness for the summer term!

Wishing you a very happy school holiday, Happy Easter and Eid Mubarak

We are delighted to welcome Mr Chris Balderstone to our local academy committee as our new Chair of Governors.  Thank you to Mr Andy Limbert for working in this role during the recruitment process and continuing as our Vice-Chair.

You will get to know Chris, and the experience he will be bringing, plus all other updates, including new committee members, in future communications.

Year 4 Residential Trip

Last week, the Year 4 children and team had the most wonderful trip to Rock UK in Irthlingbourgh. Being away from home for two nights and three days is a big thing, but their resilience shone through! They returned with lots of new skills, ever-growing independence and a fair share of mud and other children's clothing!

Huge thanks to Miss Stanley, Mrs Young, Miss Zeolla and Mr Bass for accompanying the trip full-time and Mr Pennington for supporting the evening's activities on the Thursday.

The photos above are just a taster - a full gallery can be found on the gallery page of the school website.

Reception Kitchen opening

After months of planning, school and community support and lots of hard work, the new Reception kitchen was officially opened yesterday. It was very special to welcome those in the community who have worked on the kitchen into school to be part of the celebrations. Our thanks extend to them, and those unable to attend, for bringing the initial seed of an idea to life. Without parental and community support, we wouldn't have the beautiful new kitchen and the additional resources that we now have to support authentic cooking experiences for many years to come.

Thank you very much to Wickes for working with the Reception team to plan and then provide the kitchen free of charge following some great blue sky thinking from Mrs Jacobs and Mrs Watson. Your skills and generosity are very much appreciated.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Northampton joined us in unveiling our new kitchen area, as well as visiting our Year 6s to support their understanding of the Mayor's role and support of our local community. Thank you so much.

It was a very special morning with the children rightly singing brightly with their singing, Easter bonnets, Easter parade and delicious Easter bakes.

Behaviour System

Hopefully, over the last few weeks, your child has talked to you about a ‘New Behaviour System’ that we have been trialling. The aim of this system is to provide a more consistent approach to behaviour across the school and provide you (our parents) with greater transparency as to how rewards are earned and the consequences in place for when our children make poor choices.

Following a successful trial period and the odd tweak, I am pleased to able to provide you with a copy of the ‘final draft’ of the Behaviour System for your awareness.

The new system is all linked to Class Dojo and will show when your child receives R points for rewards and C points for consequences. R1, R2 or R3 or on the rare occasion when your child makes a mistake (from which they can learn) or is having an ‘off day’, (which we all have), they may receive a C1, C2 or C3. You should receive a notification informing you and the reason for their ‘Reward’ or ‘Consequence’. As the system is all linked to Class Dojo, it is imperative that you have signed up to it. Please report any difficulties with Class Dojo to your child’s teacher.

Children in our EYFS classes will only receive positive dojos as we feel that, at this early stage, of their education, it may be a little too much to be handing out consequences. As Year 1 approaches, the teachers will begin to introduce our ‘Behaviour System’ so that the children are familiar with it ready for their next academic year.

Please note that should a Consequence be issued, NO Dojos will be lost, as we believe once a reward has been earned, it should not be removed. Should your child receive a consequence (C1, C2 or C3), please discuss this with them but with the understanding that ‘all children make mistakes.’

Moving forward, our next steps are to ensure children from across the school are being rewarded the same amount of ‘Dojos’ for the same things and that the rewards available in the ‘Dojo Shop’ are consistent as well.

Once again, I would like to thank those parents who attended the Parent Action Group for their input on behaviour and I hope that the new system goes a long way to providing what you were asking for.

Thank you for your ongoing support with this new initiative.

Building Project Updates

A team from Primech have been on-site since October 2023 installing a completely new heating system across all areas of the school. It has been a massive project, but we are now coming to an end!

Keeping the school operational and having such a large project in hand, has been a little tricky at times, but the positive impact for many years to come is substantial.

Bookings for holiday club next week are still open. The team has lots of eggciting plans ready and we hope to have many children attend. Please try to book now for any sessions to support the planning for each day.

We are delighted to be able to share further details of our Family Bingo Night! This evening promises to be a lot of fun.

Please help us spread the word to family, friends and neighbors.

Did you know that there is a PTA lottery? Since it started, it has raised £998.40 ! Lottery tickets are £1 a week.

Safeguarding

We definitely celebrate technology at DPS and everything it brings to our learning, but while the internet opens up a world of opportunities for learning and connection, it also comes with its share of risks. As technology is ever-changing, here are some tips to help you keep your child safe online:

  1. Start the Conversation: Begin talking to your child about internet safety early on.  Encourage them to ask questions and share their experiences.

  2. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish rules for internet usage in your household. Define what websites and apps are appropriate for your child's age and discuss time limits for screen time. Monitor their online activity regularly. We do occasionally hear from the children that they sneak into rooms at night to get devices!

  3. Teach Critical Thinking: Help your child develop critical thinking skills to evaluate online content. Teach them to question the credibility of information and recognise potential risks such as scams and phishing attempts.

  4. Privacy Matters: Emphasise the importance of keeping personal information private online. Advise your child to be cautious about sharing their full name, address, phone number, and other sensitive details with strangers on the internet. This is a theme that is echoed in our computing teaching in school.

  5. Model Healthy Online Behavior: Children often mimic the behaviour of adults around them. Be mindful of your own digital habits and what the children are privy to seeing or hearing.

  6. Use Parental Controls: Take advantage of parental control features available on devices and internet browsers. These tools allow you to restrict access to certain websites, set filters for inappropriate content, and monitor your child's online activity. If you'd like any help setting these up, just let us know.

  7. Encourage Open Communication: Create a supportive environment where your child feels comfortable coming to you with any concerns or problems they encounter online. Let them know that they can trust you to help them navigate difficult situations without judgement.

If you have any safeguarding concerns at any time, please be sure to pass them on.
