Newsletters 2023-2024  no. 13 26th January 2024

Thank you very much to the Y5 and Y6 families who have been in recently to support and hopefully enjoy their child's class celebration assemblies. At some point in the next few months, every class will host an assembly; it is always very special to share these, enjoy an overview of their recent learning and celebrate their confidence and achievements. Thank you Y6 Spinosaurus and Y5 Dilophosaurus, for starting the assembly season so positively.  These assemblies are most definitely a highlight of my week!

Our subject elevation groups are another regular feature within our school calendar. Held internally, these groups provide the DPS staff team with invaluable pupil voice information. This week Mrs Burdett held a science elevation group - a chance for children across the school to come and share their science learning - what do they enjoy, what can they retrieve from prior learning, how have they found assessments, what does this look like in their books etc. As we have been running these for a few years now, we have seen an ever-growing ability to talk about learning with enthusiasm and confidence. Huge thanks and well done to the children who joined us for the science group this week. The spotlight is on RE (Religious Education) next week.

You'll recall that Mrs. Watson and Mrs. Jacobs secured a brand-new and totally free kitchen from Wickes to provide regular cookery opportunities for the children in Reception! We had a team from Santander come in to paint the area, as a voluntary community project, help from many other volunteers, valuable support from our own site supervisor, Mr Connolly-Boucher, plus hours of amazing support from Mr Steve Dudden. The combined hard work, with some very kind equipment donations from Mrs Jacobs, has provided a kitchen area that is bespoke, stunning, and almost complete!

The photos below give you a sneak preview before the final jobs are complete. Huge thanks for the voluntary plumbing and tiling support set for the week ahead.

Huge thanks to everyone who has been part of this project - it has been a big team effort. Thank you also to the Reception families for supporting a sponsored event before Christmas to buy the white goods needed.

Congratulations to all the children who showcased their unique, creative and inspiring inventions over the last couple of weeks, whether at the school-only convention, or the combined one where children from other Grand Union Partnership schools joined us. Your design and presentation skills were exceptional.

Fencing @ DPS

To provide another opportunity to experience new sports and special learning opportunities, we commissioned a company to come into school and run sessions for every class trialling fencing. It was a hugely enjoyable experience and great to see everyone get fully involved and have lots of fun!

In February, we've booked the same company to lead whole class quidditch sessions - again, an opportunity to try new sports and extend the curriculum.

Thank you, Mr Taylor, for helping us to provide lots of rich sporting activities.

You may have spotted a new addition outside the front of the school by the main entrance! We are now proud owners of our very own 'Borrow Burrow'! Please use the hutch as often as you wish, borrowing books and returning them or swapping them for a book at home you would love to find a new home for, or even just taking one and keeping it at home. There are also a few adult fiction books in the burrow, so feel free to borrow, take and stock up this area too.

The Bookfair arrives on 28th February and is collected on 6th March 2024.

There's the usual exciting variety of books to keep the children turning pages and enjoying reading...why not take a look after school with your child?

Good news too - with the rising cost of living in mind, a third of the books in the fair are under £5 AND we can automatically apply a £1 discount on a book for World Book Day!

Shoppers now have the option to make cashless payments using a QR code, so feeding their reading is more convenient too!

Watch this space for a competition to win book vouchers...coming soon!

Governor Updates

“Cometh the hour cometh the man”

This happened to me very recently, as this well-known saying states!

I’m Andy Limbert and I’ve been a member of the school’s governing board for a number of years, during which time I’ve held a variety of positions, the most recent of which has been Vice Chair of the Board.

This appointment came about when Peter Nickoll was elected Chair of the board and I was elected to the position of his Vice Chair, or as Peter called it “his wing man”.

Peter and his wife (unfortunately for the school) have decided to relocate to Canterbury, to be nearer to their family, returning to the area in which they grew up. This move has therefore meant that he has had to resign his position of Chair, leaving me in the unenviable position of filling his boots until a new chair is elected. (Watch this space for an imminent announcement!)

Peter has been a fantastic Chair, incredibly supportive of Mrs Rice and all the team at DPS, and has in-depth knowledge of education. He was a past head teacher of DPS a number of years ago.

The hour “cometh” when the board was to hold its full governor's meeting last Tuesday and I received not one but 2 “invitations” to chair this up and coming meeting. The first message came from the Clerk to the Board, Penny Parkin, and the second, if the first wasn’t enough, Phil Webster, the C.E.O. of the Board of Trustees of the Grand Union Partnership. How could one refuse?

Well, the meeting went ahead, we covered all the items on the agenda unpicking school progress, considered the school development plan, shared our governor's reports, planned future school visits (myself and Mr Owen joined the science elevation group this week) and finished on time! Success? Well, I hope so. It could be the one and only time I chair the full board meeting because a new chair should be taking up the role very soon.

Best wishes to all of you.

Andy Limbert

PAG Meeting Two – Wednesday 31st January at 14:30

Our second Parent Action Group meeting of the academic year will be held in the library. The focal point of this meeting will be homework, including what homework your child should be set and how valuable you deem homework to be. I aim to keep the meeting positive and constructive and whilst all opinions are welcome, I want to use your input and ideas to help continue moving the school forward. Everyone is welcome to attend and, after the success of our first meeting, I hope many of you do so.

 Mr. Mike Pennington

Deputy Head

PSHCE

On a weekly basis, we plan class PSHCE sessions (PSHCE stands for personal, social, health and citizen education). Our sessions are a very important and valued part of our curriculum, helping our children to stay healthy, safe and prepared for life (and future work) and have a regular opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings.

These sessions are supported by weekly mindfulness sessions led by Miss Stanley and Mrs Bailey. Understanding our ever-changing emotions and how to regulate and share these, is part of the sessions.

We are very fortunate to have an extra layer of support available @ DPS, with learning mentor support from Mrs Mildren and Mrs Tapp.  If you feel that additional support might be useful for your child, please don't hesitate to make contact with the class teacher.

Further information about health and wellbeing can be found on our website.

Excitement arrived this week in the shape of freshly-printed poetry books. Many children in Years 4- 6 are now officially published poets as ‘This Is Me’ from Young Writers hits the shelves!

It’s not too late to secure a copy… visit www.youngwriters.co.uk to find out more.  In the meantime, if you’d like to have a read, there are copies in the school library for you to see.
