Newsletters 2023-2024  no. 2  22nd September 2023

Another week has flown by with lots of fun and active learning. The Reception classes had a fabulous pirate day, the Year 4's have been learning alongside a school in Ethiopia (via Zoom) and Year 6 have 'enjoyed' their first mock SATs, to name but some of the activities.

The weather was pretty wet and cold this week and although it is meant to change again next week, it's worth starting to send in coats and jumpers, please.

As a school, you might be aware that we have a slipper policy for wet weather and encourage all children, and staff, to either pop on slippers or indoor shoes during the muddy winter months. While this is optional all year round, I feel like it won't be long before we move into slippers or socks!

We encourage the use of the school field all year round as long as welly boots are put on. As these are kept in school for forest school, it's easy to access them as needed.

Please be reminded to label everything that comes into school so that we can always return it if it goes missing. Thank you. Please also take up the opportunity to come and help yourself to the pre-loved uniform at any time. This is all stored in boxes in the Admin area.

Welcome back!

I trust that you all have had a very good summer and I hope that your children have returned to school well rested and for ready for learning with their new teachers.

I particularly would like to welcome those families who are new to school, I hope that your children have settled in well and are enjoying their learning. I visited school in the first week back and was very impressed with the way that the Reception children had settled; not a tear in sight!

I would also like to welcome the new teachers to the school.  Our new deputy headteacher, Mike Pennington who is teaching a year 6 class, John Bass in Year 4 and Rosalba Nocito in Year 1.  I am also pleased to welcome back to Reception Zoe Watson.

Year 6 are preparing for their residential trip to Adventure 4You. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the weather is good so that they may enjoy their residential experience.

At our first governors’ meeting of the year, early in October, we will be looking at and agreeing our priorities for the year ahead and determining how best we can support and challenge the school to provide an even better learning experience for your children.

I do hope your children have a successful year, working hard and enjoying their learning.

I want to start by thanking all the staff and children for making me feel incredibly welcome as I settle into my new surroundings. In my short time here, I have already seen so much incredible commitment, passion and nurture towards your children. I am endeavoring to put names to faces as quickly as possible but in the meantime, it is great to greeted by so many smiley faces alongside the occasional, "Who are you?"

As part of my settling in process, I am incredibly keen to meet with parents to find out (amongst other things) your perceptions of the school, what it is you think we do well and how we can improve as we continue to move forward. Therefore, I am hoping to run five meetings throughout the year inviting you in to share your positive insights regarding Deanshanger.

The first meeting to discuss the children's amazing Behaviour and our approaches will be held after October Half-Term and you will be made aware of the date and time as soon as they are finalised.

I look forward to speaking and working with many of you over the coming months.

Regards

Mike Pennington

A huge thank you to those families who joined us for the phonics meeting last week. It was really exciting to see how many families made the effort to show they are ready to support their children in their journey to becoming lifelong readers. As always, please speak to your class teacher regarding their reading progress, and please continue to read with your child at home!

Our grateful thanks extend to the amazing volunteers from the Open University who joined us this week for an outreach day. The weather was not on their side, but despite this, they helped with several projects which made a big difference to school life.

These include repairing the leaks and the woodwork on the sensory pod, making improvements to the outside stage area, rebuilding and repairing nearly all of our outside benches, painting these and trimming lots of trees and bushes, leaf blowing, and helping to tidy up the site! Invaluable support and enthusiasm for nothing other than a tasty school lunch and hopefully a very warm feeling of helping us to provide the best for our children. Huge thanks to Laura Osborne-Fardon for leading and getting the team together.

Safeguarding

As keeping children and adults safe is a crucial part of our role, we're keen to ensure that safeguarding information is regularly shared with you.

Safeguarding is everyone's duty, so we always urge everyone to ensure that any concerns are shared immediately, even if it's just a small 'niggle' that doesn't sit right with you - maybe something that you have witnessed or heard. We recognise that this can be a very delicate area, but due to its importance, it should always be reported and we will always follow up on the concerns.

Please report any concerns to our safeguarding team:

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) - Mrs Rachel Rice

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSLs) - Mrs. Lynn Mildren, Mrs. Natalie Parsonson, Miss. Steph Forward and Mr. Mike Pennington.

Reading Mornings

It is absolutely wonderful to see so many of you coming to school on Monday mornings at 8.45am to read with your child/ren! Developing a love of reading is an essential life skill where regular support and practise is the key. Thank you

School lunches and Census Day

We are trying hard to increase the number of children that take up the offer of school lunches across school. Our drive comes from the fact that the lunches are delicious, there are multiple options on offer, they don't cost you a penny for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and you don't have to take any time making them! In KS2, there is a £2.50 cost for the lunch.

Although many of you have signed up for Fresh Start lunches, many of you still send in packed lunches. As one of the lunchtime offers is the deli bar i.e., a choice of bread, rolls, wraps, baguette with cheese, tuna, ham, or egg, and then full access to the salad bar and a dessert, it replicates pretty much what most of you put in lunch boxes.

What you might not know is that on school census days, the next one is Thursday 5th October, the take-up of universal free school meals, is a major factor in the funding that we receive in the following school year.

We obviously want to receive as much money as we can possibly get to feed back into supporting your children's learning. When your child brings a packed lunch on census day (in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2), we miss out on vital funds for the year ahead. Not only this, we think your child is missing out on a great free meal option.

If your child was going to have a packed lunch on this day, please consider having a meal from Fresh Start. There are two ways to do this.

1. Set up an account with Fresh Start – we will be sending you the login details if you have not signed up previously. This is the preferred option.

2. If you forget or find this more difficult, your child will be added on to the packed lunch option.

Thank you very much for supporting us if you can.

We are changing how we support the swimming curriculum this year and will be inviting a company to temporarily provide a swimming pool here on the school playground for three weeks!  This will be primarily for the Year 4s and Year 6s, but we hope to be able to provide a taster to most year groups.

Full info will be shared shortly. The swimming dates run from 9th October 2023 for 2 weeks before half term, and one week after. These sessions will replace the dates printed in the home school diaries.

All children in the school that enjoy running and want a healthy start to their school day, are able to join Mrs Young for 'Run a Mile in Style'. Children must be dropped off at the school office at 8.30am. The miles that each child runs, is converted into points for the house team and added to the points on sports days.

Children do not need to be wearing their running clothes, but must wear their PE trainers. As this free opportunity is only 15 minutes, the children can not join if they turn up in the office after 8.30am.

MacMillan Coffee Morning on Friday 29th September

Hosting MacMillan Coffee mornings is a long tradition at the school and something that is very special to us. We would love you to support this too if you are able.

We will be serving coffee and cakes for adults in the school community and local area straight after drop off time on Friday 29th September. There will be collection boxes available for your donations to support this very worthwhile charity.

To ensure that we have plenty of delicious cake to serve, we would appreciate all donations either on Thursday 28th or the morning of Friday 29th. All cakes, whether home-made or shop-bought will be very gratefully received.

Please help us spread the word , bring the whole family along, and help us to have a good chatter, enjoy a cake and raise lots of money for MacMillan Cancer Support.

At the end of the school day, we will be selling any leftover cakes outside the front of school.

Teacher Meetings on 2nd and 3rd October

A letter was sent home today to give you the opportunity to select your preferred time range for the forthcoming meetings. This year, we are planning the meetings slightly differently and once you have selected a preferred time range, we will send the slip back with the exact time.

We recognise that split families may need 2 time slots - please ensure that this is recorded on the form.

All meetings will be in school and in person. We look forward to seeing you and sharing how your child is settling in.

The PTA held an event-packed meeting this week! Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting and shared ideas.  Full information about the committee makeup and lots of diary dates will be shared next week.

Does anyone have contact with a vending machine company? We would like to have one in school and stock it with books as an incentive for reading. Thank you for all and any possible contacts.

Book vending machine

Can I please remind you to be very careful driving in the vicinity of the school? I appreciate that it is very very congested at the beginning and end of the day, but please always park sensibly, don't block driveways (including the Beehive), always keep a very careful lookout for pedestrians, and drive very slowly.

Thank you

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.
