Newsletters 2022-23 Friday 5th May 2023 No.16

Thank you very much for supporting our coronation event on Friday - it was great to see so many of you join us in the rain and sunshine! I was extremely proud of the way the children performed and how much new learning they have absorbed about this moment in history.

To gain an insight into our day, please enjoy the following gallery.

Coronation Event May 2023

A very warm welcome to Mr Pennington

I grew up in the North West of England before moving to Northampton (over twenty years ago) and gaining my teaching qualification.

I have taught across the Primary age-range in a variety of Northamptonshire schools, mostly recently holding a Deputy Head position for

seven years. I believe that with the right structures in place in and an holistic approach to education, every child is capable of reaching their potential.

I have twin girls whom, with the occasional eye-roll, keep me firmly on my toes. We love exploring the outdoors and finding ourselves on spontaneous adventures. In my spare time, I like to relax with my girlfriend, run, swim and play cricket for my village team.

I am looking forward to being welcomed into the Deanshanger Community working alongside the staff team to give the children the best possible future.

Calling Year 1 Families

This week on Tuesday at 3.05pm, Miss Forward and Miss Brookes will be holding a phonics workshop in their classrooms for parents to join! Not only will this be a great opportunity for you to understand even better how we teach phonics here at DPS, we will also spend a large proportion of the time looking at the upcoming phonics screening check in year 1! We will be demonstrating the process to the adults with the support of our amazing children, showing top revision tips and answering any of your questions! We can’t wait to see you all on Tuesday just before pick up time!

Our positive attitude towards reading continues...

As a school we have read 44,799,353 words which equates to 5,125 books.

We would like to congratulate the following children who have recently become Word Millionaires:

Abbie Corbett (Year 5, Hedwig Class)

Kamran Miah (Year 3, Clifford Class)

Finley Pearce (Year 6, Bear Class)

Sacha Muretti-Robinson (Year 6, Sherlock Holmes Class)

This is an amazing achievement! Please encourage your child/ren to read as much as possible!

DPS goes to the polling station!

In line with the local elections, we had a democratic vote yesterday and selected the theme for our class names next year. When every vote had been counted, the results were as follows:

1st place - Dinosaurs

2nd place - Sea life

3rd place - Flowers

4th place - Bugs

Later in the school year, when the children meet their new teaches for September 2023, they will select the dinosaur name for their class.

In the last newsletter, we shared the excitement of our new sandpit and Terry the Tortoise! Both have become firm favourites to children across the school.

Please be reminded that we hold a very large stock of pre-loved uniforms and we are always delighted when you pop in and take whatever you would like. It's all free and all crying out to be worn proudly again. As well as regular uniform items, we also have shoes, trainers and coats. Pop in at any time and have a look.

Quicksticks Hockey Competition
On Wednesday, our Year 3 and 4 children took part in a quicksticks hockey competition against schools in our local cluster. Both teams showed amazing teamwork and communication.

As a celebration of reading we managed to purchase some lovely new books for the school with some of the proceeds from the Scholastic Book Fair!

This is a small selection of the books we managed to order and add to our already extensive library offering.

Poems for King Charles

The children below created these poems in their own time!

From Tuesday 9th May to Friday 12th May our Year 6 children will sit their Key Stage 2 SAT (Standard Assessment Tests) in reading, maths, spelling, punctuation and grammar. These exams assess the children's journey through primary school and in many ways are a rite of passage, as in the process of preparing for them, we are ensuring the children are ready for their education at secondary school.

We are incredibly proud of our current Year 6 children - they have worked hard and revised with real commitment and dedication. We wish them luck with these tests next week! Your attitude has been immense!
