Newsletters 2022-23 Friday 21st April 2023 No.15

We have had a great first week back with the launch of new topics of learning, seeing everyone reconnecting with their friends, building upon previous learning, the build-up to SATs testing in Year 6, a school residential trip for Year 4, and welcoming two new teachers to the team. A very warm welcome to Mrs. Evie Bryan in the Reception Elmer class and Mr. Theo Ward in Year 3 Clifford class.

At the time of writing, the Year 4 team are enjoying the last part of their residential trip to Rock UK. They have had a huge amount of fun and have shown beautiful manners and a strong 'yes I can' attitude. Big thanks to the staff accompanying the trip and keeping us up to date with a plethora of action-packed photos. The gallery pages show was a fun and active time they've had.

If you have a look on the 'join our team' page of the website, you'll see that we currently have some vacancies. Please help spread the word about these and make contact if you would like to know more.

As you have probably seen in the news, two further dates have been released by the NEU for teaching strikes - Thursday 27 April, and Tuesday 2 May 2023.

We are unable to know the impact of these strikes, but we will keep you fully updated with any changes in plans as we know them. As previously, we hope to be able to keep classes running, but it is always worth considering a backup plan just in case.

Reading Fluency @DPS

Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.

In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately. Their reading is smooth and has expression.

Children who do not read with fluency sound choppy and awkward. Those students may have difficulty with decoding skills or they may just need more practise with speed and smoothness in reading. Fluency is also important for motivation; children who find reading laborious tend not to want read!

As readers head into upper KS2, fluency becomes increasingly important. The volume of reading required in KS2 escalates dramatically. Children whose reading is slow or laboured will have trouble meeting the reading demands of their year group.

Although everyone is at different stages with their reading, to give you an idea of expectations, at the end of Year 2, to be considered a fluent reader and therefore reach the 'expected standard' for reading, there is an expectation that your child should be able to read approximately 90 words per minute.  You might want to give this a go at home just out of interest.

What you can do to help at home

1) Read Aloud to Your Child to Improve Reading Fluency.

Even if your child is old enough to read by himself, it’s helpful for him to hear someone more practised read to them. Read aloud to your child to provide an example of how fluent reading sounds. Let them get a better sense of rhythm, intonation and, if you pick a variety of different genres, will develop an appreciation for all types of books.

2) Work on Phonemic Awareness Skills

Many children have trouble with reading fluency because they have trouble understanding how the pieces of words (such as chunks, digraphs, and blends) are manipulated to make new words. Help your child decode words well, help them build speed and accuracy by:

  • Reading aloud and having your child match his voice to yours
  • Having your child practise reading the same list of words, phrase, or short passages several times.
  • Reminding your child to pause between sentences and phrases

3) Build Sight Word Vocabulary

Sight words, sometimes known as core words, are the foundation of a child’s reading and writing skills. If they can’t quickly recognise common words, your child is more likely to stumble as they try to sound out everything he reads.

4) Paired Reading

Paired reading can mean alternating sentences while you read with your child, or reading aloud together. Just come up with a signal to indicate when your child wants to read a sentence by herself or is stuck on a word.

5) Echo Reading

Echo reading is a great strategy for children who have great technical reading skills, but for whom expressiveness is a problem. If your child struggles to read with expression, try reading a section and then having him “echo” you, using the same intonations and emphasis you used.

Please support your child with this essential learning!

Thank you very much for your ongoing support to ensure that your child is in school ready for a 8.45am start on a daily basis whenever they are able. We are very proud to have strong attendance this school year – it is obviously in contrast to trends over the last couple of years due to covid. Since September, our attendance sits at 96.7% where the national average is 93.6 %! Thank you. We recognise how much good attendance impacts on the children’s learning, progress and wellbeing. Individual attendance under 90% at the end of the year is classified as persistent absenteeism; where attendance falls close to this category, we will always be monitoring very closely.

Please be reminded to always let us know if your child is going to be absent and the reason for this.  As part of our first-day response to absence, we will call you if we haven’t heard from you first thing in the morning.  On occasion, it could also be that the necessary documentation to support an absence is required e.g., a doctor’s note. I appreciate how challenging it is that holiday prices escalate greatly in school holidays, but as you know, it is highly unlikely that we can authorise holidays in term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. We are obliged to report holidays in term time to West Northamptonshire Council. Please see the following website for further information click here.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance and would like some support, please don’t hesitate to make contact. Likewise, we will make contact if we would like to know more and know how we can support you further. Mrs. Hannah Hodge is our attendance lead, working in conjunction with myself. Having said how important attendance is, we do recognise that illnesses happen and children should not be in school if they are unwell. On the school website, you’ll find guidance information about common illnesses. Click here for more info.

Please be reminded that we hold a very large stock of pre-loved uniforms and we are always delighted when you pop in and take whatever you would like. It's all free and all crying out to be worn proudly again. As well as regular uniform items, we also have shoes, trainers and coats. Pop in at any time and have a look.

Congratulations to the community fridge

Two years and counting!

At this point, we would like to say the community Fridge only operates because of time our volunteers give up to collect the food and then open up the fridge on a daily basis.  As a community, we should be proud that we have managed to operate this community project for over 2 years and hopefully the fridge will continue to make food heroes of us all.
