To quote Captain Sir Tom Moore, The sun will shine on you again and the clouds will go away. At Deanshanger this week, we have had quite a gathering of clouds, and it has been making school life more challenging than normal. Like you, we are looking forward to the sunshine!

With a large group of children (and their families) testing positive for COVID and our highest amount of staff absence yet, it has been quite a week!  Since I have been one of the staff unwell this week, I must say a huge thank you to every single member of staff for continuing to make everything go as well as possible. Mrs Webb, alongside SLT, Mrs Godwin and the whole team, has capable navigated the choppy waters - thank you. Thank you for all your well wishes too. Like other staff, I can't wait to be back in once I get the all important two consecutive days of negative tests as per the updated guidance.

Covid continues to have a real impact on our school and community, just as it does nationally and internationally. The amount of cases this week is high and something that we are monitoring very carefully and with a measured response.  Please continue to keep a very close eye on your children for any symptoms. The latest government guidance, January 20th 2022, can be found here.

In school, we continue to follow the government guidance in terms of classroom ventilation, good hand hygiene, sanitising cleans and following the advice re testing and self-isolating. Although face coverings are no longer mandatory in some settings, as a staff, we have decided to continue wearing them in shared inside spaces for the time being and review this regularly.

Mask wearing in children in something that a few of you have called the school office about today. There is no statutory requirement for your children to do this at all and indeed mask wearing in younger children comes with mixed reviews and many pros and cons. If you feel it would support your child's anxiety, then of course they're welcome to wear one, but otherwise, we would not expect your child to wear a mask; this is shared with safety and wellbeing in mind.

Sending very best wishes to everyone struggling with COVID and other illnesses at this time. Try to keep strong and smiling.

Please be reminded that we continue to work through the consultancy period to potentially convert to join the Grand Union Partnership on May 1st 2022. Thank you for all the questions raised in this regard.

You will find an extensive frequently asked questions document on the school website. Please don't hesitate to make contact if you have any further questions by contacting Mr David Aaronson, our Chair of Governors.

The formal consultancy period closes on 18th February 2022.

We are excited to be pulling together lots of exciting elements to create a well-being garden for the children. Now, more than ever, we continue to focus on mental health and wellbeing, and we are very proud of your children for being able to recognise its importance and how to support others.

Our wellbeing garden has started with a beautiful cherry blossom tree kindly donated by the Japanese Society. This gift, was grown especially for us and arrived at the end of last week. It has been capably planted in its new home by a group of green fingers volunteers below.  We have no doubt that this will, in time, make a stunning centre piece for the area.

The funds raised from the Christmas Shop will be used to fund the project, although we are also on the lookout for any donations and discounts!

Our next steps include white pebbles on the ground, wind chimes, a water feature, some wall decoration and anything else that will enable it to be a calm place to support wellbeing. If you have any unwanted items that you think might be useful, please let us know.

In addition to the garden, the children have helped us put an extensive shopping list together and we will be actioning this shortly. Their wish list includes mindfulness colouring books, fidget toys, pet cuddly toys for each classroom, lots of additional plants and flowers, sensory bubble tubes and lava lamps.

More updates will be shared as we have them.

With the half-term break rapidly approaching, don't leave it too long before you consider booking places at Wrap Club.

Chair of Governor Updates

St Begh's Catholic Junior School - Governors

Good day and I hope you are looking forward to the weekend. It has been a very busy time for governors as we have started the consultation process for our next steps on the journey to becoming an Academy and hopefully joining the Grand Union Partnership MAT.

Last Monday, I led a presentation for the staff and on the Thursday one for parents/carers. We were joined by Mr Phil Webster CEO of GUP/Head of New Bradwell Primary School and Mr Jez Wilson Head of Development at GUP. I want to thank both staff and all those parents who joined us for both presentations. At both presentations a range of interesting questions were covered including Contracts, Curriculum, SEND provision, Assessment, Finance, Oversight of the MAT and even the length of the day.

We have drawn together all the different questions from staff, parents and other community groups together and created a FAQ document which is available on the school website.

Can I suggest that you take the time to revisit the presentation on the school website and if you have any further questions please email me?

Also, if you were unable to join us, there is still time to be involved as the consultation doesn't close until February 18th

Other activities I have been involved in are a Catch-Up meeting with Mrs Rice, a virtual assembly and yesterday a BNTO meeting by Zoom with Miss Stanley and members of the committee.

Take care, and thank you for your continued support of the school.

Mr. David Aaronson

In lieu of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday falling within the June half-term break, don't forget to mark Friday 1st July in your diaries as an extra day off school.

Our Community Fridge continues to be well-used and is supported by an amazing team of volunteers. Today we even received the donation of a new, much larger, fridge! Thank you so much Natalie and Pedro - the family of a staff member at the school.

The opening hours for the fridge are Mondays 8.30am - 9.30am, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 3.30pm - 4.30pm and Fridays 5.30pm - 6.30pm.

For regular users, you'll have noticed that we have currently stopped the pickup of stock from Whittlebury Bakery as we were finding we had just too much bread and couldn't find homes for it in time and, as a result, we ended up wasting the delicious products. We're ready to resume with this again once demand grows again - we think warmer and lighter evenings might help.

Ongoing thanks to the Co-op, Whittlebury and Foodshare for helping us all to reduce food waste.

Wishing you all a safe and happy weekend,

Rachel Rice
