We have had a great week in school, but a pretty challenging one with several staff unwell (for various reasons) and a lot of extra cover.  Although we don't intend to close any class or year group, there have been days of late when it has been very hard to keep everything running as closely to 'normal' as possible. The staff, as always, have been amazing and I would like to give them a special shout-out this week for being nothing less than amazing and being as flexible as gymnasts!

We continue to keep a very close eye on the number of positive covid cases in the school. As I shared last weekend, we have taken advice from PHE and on Monday, I spoke to our local infection prevention control centre. Their advice was to carry on with the same measures as we currently have in place. You'll have noticed that we have moved indoor PE outside for the time being and all of our meetings internally are back on Zoom (as well as school assemblies). Visitors to the school are requested to wear face coverings at all times.

We really appreciate your open communication with us if there is a positive case in the household. We would prefer that your child is kept at home if they have been for a PCR test until a negative test result is received or the isolation period has ended.

As of the end of today, we have 12 positive child cases in the school.

Reception - 1, Year 1 - 0, Year 2 - 2, Year 3 - 5, Year 4 -1, Year 5 - 3 and Year 6 - 0.

Our very best wishes extend to everyone that is currently unwell and isolating.

Although we know that a Christmas concert inside in the warm with good lighting and sound, would be wonderful, our outside concerts this year have been planned so that they can go ahead without any increased concern. Please wrap up warm though as it has gone very cold of late!

Reading Eggs Weekly Challenge

Across Phase 1 and 2 the children utilise an online reading app called 'Reading Eggs'. After Christmas, we will begin our 'Reading Eggs Challenge'. Each week the accounts of the children will be monitored and for every 10 minutes of reading your child has completed they will gain one entry into the competition. So, for example, if your child reads for one hour that week, they would gain six entries. On a Friday assembly, an entry will be picked from a hat. This child will have the opportunity on a Monday break time to go and read with whichever adult they would like to within the school! They may choose to read or be read with! They will also be awarded a certificate.

Chair of Governor Updates

St Begh's Catholic Junior School - Governors

Last week was a busy week with a Finance Meeting on Monday with an extensive agenda and full discussion on the different elements of the budget. Governors wish to thank Naomi Godwin our Business Manager for her hard work in ensuring that our finances are monitored and the best value for the school.

Governors have been in school this week to monitor their respective years as leads and meet with teachers and staff looking specifically at Writing across the school. It is really exciting that we can return to actually visiting the school in person.

I was very pleased that I was able to join the virtual Remembrance Day Assembly on the 11th November, the poems written and presented by the children were moving and the knowledge of the significance of the day was inspiring. Thank you to all the teachers and pupils for their hard work.

This Monday we had a Curriculum Meeting and the main item on the agenda was a presentation on the latest data - Reading, Writing, Maths and Spelling and Grammar. We had a very detailed discussion about each year group and asked a number of questions.

We also shared our latest visits as year group link governors and plans for the next terms visits.

I joined a virtual training session with our SENCO and the LSAs on Autism.

COVID continues to present challenges to staff and pupils but we continually review the guidance from Local and Central Governments.

As always my thanks to the Governors for their commitment and support for the school and to parents and carers a similar thank you.

Huge congratulations to our Tag Rugby team who recently play in our local cluster tournament. They completed the tournament without a single loss which is a great achievement considering this was their first-ever tournament together. Overall, they narrowly missed out on first place due to try difference, but second place was an excellent result. Congratulations Year 6 and well done for doing the school proud.

Athletics Team!

Calling all athletic enthusiasts!

During January, we have entered a Years 5/6 and Years 3/4 Sportshall Athletics Team into a couple of tournaments. These will take part during the school day, however, we would like to open the opportunity up to all children in those year groups, to try out for their place on the team.

The events children take part in are:

  • Short sprint relays
  • Stamina relays
  • Hurdle relays
  • Standing jump
  • Standing triple jump
  • Chest throw
  • Vertical jump
  • Speed bounce
  • Javelin throwing

Your child will have a chance to try out for these events during their games and PE lessons before the Christmas break. From these sessions, we will invite children to take part in an athletics club a couple of lunchtimes a week. This is so that when they go to the tournament, they are familiar with what they will be doing and won’t be overawed by the new situation.

We will be running a Christmas Shop in school in the last week of term. The children are invited to bring in £2 for every gift that they would like to buy as a surprise for family members. There will be a wide selection of gifts on offer for them to choose from and then wrap themselves - the whole point is for them to be able to put some surprises under the tree for you and enjoy picking something special.

The money should be sent in with your child in a named envelope. For very young children, feel free to write on the envelope who you would like your child to shop for so that we can guide them in the right direction. We will have gifts for them to purchase for their siblings too.

Celebrating Festivals of Light

We have been thinking long and hard about how we can deliver special performances this year in a way that we can almost guarantee that an audience can be present. We have decided that all the phase concerts will be outside in front of the Christmas tree in a carol concert type format with the children sharing seasonal songs, led by our wonderful music teacher and dressed in their winter coats, hats and scarves. Each phase will share a performance within the school day and later in the afternoon/evening – you are welcome to attend at a time that works best for you. We sincerely hope that the children will attend both concerts.

Some seating will be put out for you to enjoy the concerts, but you will also be able to stand and watch/join in too. Should it be a wet day, the concerts will be in the courtyard. If this is the case though, we’d suggest that you come with umbrellas and hooded coats as the roof in the courtyard does not cover the whole area! Our dream would be for there to be a gentle snow fall throughout – how magical would that be!

With these plans in mind, please disregard the printed dates in the home school diary and instead try to save the date for these one :

Tuesday 7th December at 1.30pm, Reception and Year 1 concert repeated at 4.30pm. Children to be back at school at 4.10pm for the 4.30pm concert

Tuesday 7th December at 2.30pm, Year 2 and Year 3 concert repeated at 5.30pm. Children to be back at school at 5.10pm for the 5.30pm concert.

Tuesday 14th December at 2.30pm, Year 4,5 and 6 concert. This will be repeated at 5.30pm. Children to be back at school at 5.10pm for the 5.30pm concert.

Older members of our school community and the village are very welcome to join us for a dress rehearsal on Tuesday 7th December at 10.30am. Like the other concerts this will be outside, but hopefully, a mince pie and a glass of sherry will help to keep the spirits high.

There will be an optional collection at the concerts with all proceeds passed to St Mark’s Meals –a charity that supports our school, and 59 other schools in the local area, with food boxes for families experiencing difficult times. https://stmarksmk.com/meals/

The PTA will be, very kindly, serving hot chocolate and mince pies at the concerts, and with our Eco hats on, the price will be reduced for those bringing their own travel mugs with them.

Christmas Jumpers

You'll notice that we have selected several dates for your child to wear a Christmas jumper (or something similar). We tend to pick a few dates so that there is plenty of time to get good wear out of an item, as well as plenty of time to get in the festive spirit.  There is no obligation for your child to wear a jumper if they would prefer not to.

As the Christmas concerts are outside, we would recommend that they wrap up very warm on these days (plus yourselves if you are coming along). Christmas jumpers are warmly encouraged, but they are likely to be hidden under thick coats, hats, scarves and gloves.

It has been a particularly busy week this week and I apologise if you are awaiting a response to an email. Please don't hesitate to resend it and I will endeavour to get back in touch ASAP. Thank you.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Stay safe,

Rachel Rice
