Updates from our Chair of Governors

I hope everyone is well and enjoying the sunshine.

Governors have been busy with meetings and school activities. I attended the opening of the Community Fridge last Monday afternoon and must say it is an amazing project that deserves the support of the whole village.

On Monday evening, we had a virtual curriculum meeting where we looked at the recent data and had a full discussion on present trends and how we can address specific areas within year groups. We were impressed by the commitment of staff and pupils and the levels of support put in place for all.

The following Thursday we had a full Governing Body meeting where we covered a wide range of areas including a Headteacher report, Governor Action Plan, Committee reports and Governor visits.

Thanks go to all the governors for their hard work and commitment

Book Club

Due to current COVID restrictions, we are unable to run our regular 'Book Fair'. As an alternative, we are promoting our Scholastic Book Club. This is now online at https://schools.scholastic.co.uk/deanshanger/digital-book-club. There are hundreds of fantastic children’s books to choose from, and every £1 you spend on this month’s Book Club will earn 20p for our school in Scholastic Rewards.

Please place your order online by May 21st, 2021. Books are then delivered to school and we distribute them so they can be brought home by children.

As Mrs Rice mentioned in the last newsletter, we have had several subject 'Elevation Group' meetings. The first of these meetings looked at what the children thought of their learning in History.

At Deanshanger Primary, the children have access to a wide and broad history curriculum through their year group IPC (International History Curriculum) units, various whole school learning events (assemblies and celebration events), displays and events through the village community(Deanshanger Heritage Society). We are lucky enough to have a permanent display in our school library that is maintained by the Heritage Society. For example, the current display is looking at leisure activities throughout the years in Deanshanger.

As a group, we looked at each year group at a time, starting with Year One. Initially, the children shared their 'History' learning in their books, sharing what they thought history learning was. It was incredible to hear about the children's experiences of their learning - looking at transport from the past, the lives of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole, Stone Age settlers, the Anglo-Saxons, Roman invasion of Britain, World War 2 and the Maya civilisation to name but a few...

For the second part of the meeting, we looked at a random range of historical artefacts. For example, a bed warmer, lantern, original computer from the 1970s, doll, photographs of Victorian schooling and a Viking longboat model. The children were invited to talk about each artefact and think about how it was used. They were also asked to put the objects in chronological order - a bit like the 'Antiques Roadshow'. It was quite interesting to hear that many children thought the bed warmer was in fact a pizza oven!

For us, this gave us a very good insight into the children's historical understanding of what they have been learning in lessons and concepts like chronology. There were many positives but, as always, things we need to work on a little bit more. In this instance, historical vocabulary. Encouraging the children to use words to explain their learning like AD, archaeology, artefact, BC, century, conquest, invade, democracy, discovery, empire, explorer, global...

As always please encourage your child with their history learning at home. This does not have to be through a school set history assignment. It could be through a magazine, computer programme, book, TV programme or film, family quiz or a visit to historical sites of interest. This week I was impressed with a conversation I was having with a child about their visit last weekend to Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden. It was amazing to hear the history learning...

Don’t forget that our latest Scholastic Book Club is now online at https://schools.scholastic.co.uk/deanshanger/digital-book-club. There are hundreds of fantastic children’s books to choose from, and every £1 you spend on this month’s Book Club will earn 20p for our school in Scholastic Rewards.

Please place your order online by May 21st, 2021.

As stated above, for every £1 you spend, our school will earn 20p in Scholastic Rewards that we can use to spend on books for our school library. Please support this activity. As stated above all orders for this month need to be completed by May 21st, 2021. This is so they can be delivered to school within 5 working days.

Community Fridge

Our community fridge opened 2 weeks ago and has already become a busy place with our community playing an important part in reducing food surplus/waste.

You are all warmly invited to visit the Community Fridge to either help yourself to surplus items and/or drop off items from your home.

There is absolutely no cost for taking the items and indeed you are all food heroes for playing a part in reducing food waste.

Huge thanks to everyone that has joined our ever-growing volunteer network and for visiting the fridge.

Our opening hours may change and adapt to demand in the future, but for now -

Mondays 8.30am - 11.00am

Wednesdays 1.00pm - 4.30pm

Fridays 7.00pm - 8.30pm

The room is absolutely bulging at the moment, so please try to come along this evening to help us avoid wasting this food.  It will be open on Monday (despite the bank holiday) at the hours outlined above.

If you would like to know more about the Community Fridge and possibly volunteer, please make contact with either Mr. Peel, Mrs. Penwell or Mrs. Rice.

Huge thanks to the Co-op for being our main food provider. Your help and support has been invaluable.

So far we have received over 330 KG of food donations from the Co-op, our link support at Wolverton's Community Fridge and private donations!
