Newsletters

Deanshanger Primary School - Newsletter10- 22/01/2021

With daily and sometimes twice daily messages at the moment, I wondered if we would have much to share in a newsletter. How wrong was I!

The lockdown has been ordered by the government because public services were never designed for the conditions we will experience in an unchecked pandemic. The restriction of schooling is unprecedented in our lifetimes and reflects the severity of the measures required to temper the current threat. It clearly has huge implications for the working lives of us all.

It is far from easy for you all at the moment and I must congratulate you all for everything that you are doing to keep your child/ren in the right place for learning and supporting them in a way that works for you.  We appreciate that some days will be better than others, so try not to be too hard on yourselves.  We are all living and working in extreme circumstances.

I definitely need to give a big shout out to the amazing staff too.  I am so impressed with how committed they are to keeping school routines, support, learning and the curriculum going whilst also keeping up with a huge amount of individual communication. Our training and experience did not include remote learning and it is far from easy.  If I'm totally honest, I didn't even know what Zoom was until mid-March 2020 and here we are using it (and Teams) for teaching, learning and assemblies on a daily basis!

Thank you for helping us to keep the covid risk as low as possible by keeping your children at home wherever possible. Although we appreciate that we have had year 6 learning from home this week, the number of children in school has reduced regardless - thank you. The more we all reduce our children’s time mixing in school, the fewer transmission chains we make for the virus. We must all remember that these chains risk connecting to those vulnerable to severe disease, this means the teaching body we all rely on and our own family support bubbles.

Keep safe everyone - brighter days must be on the way!

Rachel

The devastating news of the loss of one of our dads has really shaken our school community. A tragic loss and one that has moved us all. Your outpouring of love and condolences for Sachel and Joshua, following the loss of Sean has been overwhelming.

There is no night without a dawning

''There is no night without a dawning, no winter without a spring, and beyond the dark horizon, our hearts will once more sing... for those who leave us for a while, have only gone away, out of a restless, care worn world, into a brighter day.''

Mindfulness

With Mrs Neville

In the past week Mrs Neville has been asked to plan and deliver a series of Mindfulness sessions for students and adults following on from her ‘Mindfulness for Wellbeing in Schools’ training and general ongoing learning linked to Mindfulness and Positive Psychology; and the development of the ‘Mindfulness on Monday’ sessions aimed sharing Mindfulness learning with the children of the school.

Mindfulness has been shown to have positive effects on many aspects of our lives when practised and included regularly in our health and wellbeing habits, but can also influence our mental wellbeing at the point of participation. These sessions will focus on aspects of stress reductions and the development of relaxation techniques, but can also have far-reaching benefits too. Research has shown that Mindfulness and Mindfulness-based meditation can:

  • Improve mental health – reduce anxiety, stress, depression, decrease exhaustion and irritability with regular sessions of meditation.
  • Improve memory - reaction times become faster and mental and physical stamina increases.
  • Improve happiness and contentment; alongside reduce the likelihood of psychological distress.
  • Improve physical health. Mindfulness can dramatically reduce pain and the emotional reaction to it. Recent trials suggest that average pain ‘unpleasantness’ levels can be reduced by 57 % while accomplished meditators report reductions of up to 93 %.
  • Improve mood and quality of life in chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and lower-back pain, IBS, and in challenging serious life-limiting medical illnesses.
  • Improve working memory, creativity, attention span and reaction speeds. It also enhances mental and physical stamina and resilience.
  • Improve Emotional Intelligence.
  • Mindfulness has been shown to be at least as good as medication or counseling for the treatment of clinical-level depression.
  • Enhance brain function - it increases grey matter in areas associated with self-awareness, empathy, self-control and attention.
  • Soothes the parts of the brain that produce stress hormones and builds those areas that lift mood and promote learning.
  • It even reduces some of the thinning of certain areas of the brain that naturally occurs with ageing.
  • Improves the immune system.
  • Meditation and mindfulness improve control of blood sugar in type II diabetes.
  • Improves heart and circulation by reducing blood pressure and lowering the risk of hypertension.
  • Mindfulness reduces the risks of developing and dying from cardiovascular disease and lowers its severity should it arise.

These sessions, will focused on Mindfulness Meditation as a way of reducing stress and enhancing relaxation.

Thank you so much Mrs Neville for running these session. They have helped many of the school community keep calm during a very tough time for everyone:)

Maths Learning

Knowing your times tables - both multiplication and division facts, is extremely important. Many aspects of maths are related to these key facts. All children from Year 2 upwards have access to Times Table Rockstars. Please make sure that your child is accessing this valuable resource for at least 5 to 10 minutes a day.

Children in Foundation Stage and Year 1 have access to Numbots. Again, please make sure your child is accessing this resource as it reinforces basic mathematical skills and facts that are essential for learning.

Home learning activities are also being set in 'MyMaths'. Please make sure your child is accessing this resource. If you have any questions or queries, please contact your child's class teacher.

Please contact Emilie Stevenson wrapclub@deanshanger.northants.sch.uk,  if would like to know more about the holiday Club over the half-term break.  Please be reminded that we break up on Monday 12th February and return on Monday 22nd February.

Community Fridge Update

Deanshanger Primary school are working towards setting up a community fridge for the Deanshanger community. This is a tried and tested way of stopping good food ending up in the bin. We  plan to locate our fridge in an accessible place ensuring access during the school day. The fridge will allow the community to make surplus food freely available to anyone who wants it. ... Anyone can pick up the food for free, they are not policed and the operation is based on trust.

What's happened so far?

We have managed to join the Community Fridge Network (CFN) and have a new fridge on order for around 5 weeks time. We have a room available by the library entrance, which was used as a kiln room many years ago. We are currently spending some time setting up this room so its ready to host the community fridge. We will spend the next few weeks setting up some relationships with local retailers. The CFN help with this process and will assist us in securing some partners.

Once we have the fridge up and running I'm sure we'll be looking for volunteers to help us manage the day to day running of the fridge. Please email the school office if you are interested in helping once we begin to share food in the community.

Governors update from Mr David Aaronson, Chair of Governors

Firstly, a Happy New Year to everyone,  even if a little late.

As Governors we appreciate all the efforts school have made in putting in place a plan of action to ensure all children whether in school or remote learning receive the support and educational opportunities they deserve.

Governors want to acknowledge the enthusiasm that pupils have shown in their learning and the engagement with school.

We have been encouraged at the support you as parents or carers have given your children and the positive messages the school has received.

We recognise that the fluid nature of the situation can give rise to the occasional problem but rest assured that any concerns you may have will be responded to as quickly as possible.

As Chair I have taken part in Zoom meetings with Mrs Rice and the Local Authority and all Governors are fully engaged in their support for the current plan of action.

Governors are looking at ways of engaging with staff and year groups through Zoom meetings, this will allow us to keep our finger on the pulse of learning and progress in these challenging times.

Finally, I took part in a virtual assembly last Friday and want to say how much we have to celebrate in and outside school re learning, pupils supporting each other, and shared experiences.

Please stay safe and thank you again to everyone for all your support and encouragement,  it is very much appreciated by staff and governors.
