We may have had to change the format of our Mother's Day due to COVID, but being outside today in the sunshine seemed to be perfect.

Thank you for joining us this afternoon and making it such a lovely occasion.

Special thanks to Lisa Gordon and her mum, Eileen, Sue Flannery and Shelley Fletcher for cooking school lunches as normal and also making over 520 scones for us today! Quite an achievement.

Big thanks also to the school council members that helped with the service and some of these photos - your support was fabulous.

COVID Updates

As shared earlier in the week, it has been very challenging in school of late. As much as we all want to be able to move on and put COVID times behind us, the pandemic has stopped us in our tracks again! The good news is that we are all very used to adapting school life and quickly changing to different plans - children, staff and parents/carers.

In the younger year groups in particular, the children have shown incredible resilience this week as the staffing has been different from the norm. My admiration for the staff continues to be at an all-time high! They have been amazing, as have your children.

Today we have 28 confirmed cases of COVID amongst our pupils and 8 staff members impacted by it.  We sincerely hope that numbers fall over the weekend and that next week brings a greater sense of normality.

Very best wishes to everyone that is unwell at the moment - we look forward to welcoming you back to school shortly.

We have regretfully had to postpone our early reading meeting about Little Wandle Letters and sounds, our new phonics programme. We are implementing this phonics programme from Reception upwards. We are very sad about this but hopefully we will reschedule this meeting soon so look out for details.

In the meantime, we attach the following documents to help you learn more about this programme:

  • Notes for presentation for parents and carers
  • Programme overview. This shows you how your child is learning to read!

Chair of Governor Updates

St Begh's Catholic Junior School - Governors

Good day everyone,

It has been a very busy time for governors with four meetings on the 15th March and 21st March.

Our first two meetings were Personnel and Curriculum, held virtually, and focused on staffing, performance management and the latest data capture. This was presented in great detail by the Head Teacher who answered various questions and clarified specific queries to our satisfaction. Mrs. Rice and staff involved in collating all the data were thanked for all their hard work.

On the 21st March, we held a Finance meeting followed by a full governors' meeting. The Finance meeting focused on the budget, present and future projects, pupil and sports premium, and COVID funding support; our Business Manager, Naomi Godwin, answered questions and was thanked for her hard work in putting these reports together.

The full governing body meeting primarily focused on the Head Teacher's report and governors asked a number of questions re various headings and again thanked Mrs. Rice for putting the report together. We also fed back on our recent meetings - safeguarding, training needs and MAT updates.

I have met with our SENCO and had a very good discussion around progress, challenges and future needs and plans. I have shared the SEND report with the governors and will be putting together my notes on my visit shortly.

I joined the World Book Day parade last week and enjoyed the variety of characters chosen by both children and staff. Then on Friday I ventured into the KS2 disco and was sure everyone had a lovely time dancing to a wide range of music, some of which I actually recognised.

Mrs. Rice and I have continued to monitor safeguarding matters and all governors are being kept informed of COVID situation. We want to acknowledge the resilience of both staff and pupils in their response to the challenging demands COVID present.

Finally, details of our parent governor vacancy are included in this newsletter; we also have another vacancy so if you are interested to learn more please contact me, and I am happy to talk about what is involved.

In the meantime my best wishes to all children and staff who are impacted by COVID and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Mr. David Aaronson

Mrs. Amanda Davis first joined the Deanshanger team in a leadership and teaching position in September 2019. Since that time, she has provided strong support for school improvement as well as helping us to battle through the challenging COVID times.  In this time she has also had a gorgeous son, Oliver. Amanda will be leaving at the end of the next week to spend more time with her young family.

We wish her well in this new exciting chapter and send grateful thanks for everything that she has brought to the school.

The beautiful photo below might give you another little clue as to why Mrs. Davis is changing her plans and leaving us. How exciting!

Mr Nik Larcombe initially joined the school to cover Amanda's maternity leave and will be returning again, after Easter, to cover her role again! It will be great to welcome Nik back to the team to support this part-time role in Year 5 and Year 6.

Are you interested in being a school governor at Deanshanger Primary School? Would you like to be part of a strong and committed team of governors that support the School in this next exciting phase of joining the Grand Union Partnership?

Mrs. Hannah Bailey was a dedicated and highly committed member of the governing board until she started her teaching role at the school in January 2022. Whilst delighted that she is now a member of the teaching team, we have a vacancy for a parent governor as a result. We would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her valued input to school improvement in her governance role and the same highly valued input now as a Y5 class teacher.

Although this is a voluntary role, there are lots of reasons that might make you want to consider joining us!

What does the role of a school governor involve?

You’ll get to see things from the school's perspective and see how the school is managed and led. You'll gain an in-depth understanding of how decisions are made at Deanshanger while playing an integral part in deciding our next steps. As a parent governor, you would not speak 'on behalf' of the parent body but rather share your own thoughts as a parent. The role and responsibilities of parent governors are no different from those of the other governors.  You don’t need previous experience as support and training will be given. Whilst the meetings are largely in the evening, there will be times when you will be invited into the school during the day. School governors are the largest volunteer force in education, with around 250,000 governors in the UK!

Although this could possibly be a very different role from your current or previous experience, it will enable you to develop varied skills both personally and professionally e.g., strategic planning, human resources and performance management, project management, marketing, decision-making, and lots of communication and teamwork.

We have three committees at the school – Finance and Premises, Curriculum and Personnel. Each committee meets three times a year and, in between the meetings, there is often reading materials shared for comment and school visits. You wouldn’t be expected to sit on all three committees. Additionally, you would be part of full governor’s meetings and there are three of these a year unless extraordinary meetings are required.

We encourage applications from all members of society, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, disability or age (as long as you're over 18).

If this is something that you would like to know about, please contact Mr David Aaronson, Chair of Governors in the first instance.

Thank you for helping us to raise close to £500 on Red Nose Day. An amazing amount of money!

Huge thanks to the PTA and everyone that helped support the school discos last Friday. They were extremely well attended and everyone seemed to be a lot of fun.
