Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We hope that you have had a lovely summer break and are ready for the year ahead.  We have lots of new topics and activities to look forward to.  The children have already started their different topics and are settling in well into year 2. This is an important year in terms of developing independence in learning in preparation for Year 3.  We would very much hope that you support your child on this important part of their learning journey. 

Reading
The children now have reading records. Please write in these anything you read with them at home. We will be sending home a phonics book for your child(ren) to read to you. This will be sent home each Thursday. Please can you return these each Monday so that we can change their books.  They will also have a library book for you to share with them. Some of the choices of library books may need you to read to them or discuss the pictures. 

PE
Indoor PE is on a Thursday. Outdoor PE is on a Friday. Please ensure your child has the correct clothing. If your child is unable to take out their earrings please ensure they have white tape that can cover the earrings. 

Forest School: This will be on Tuesday – your child will need a raincoat, waterproof trousers and wellington boots as we will be out regardless of the weather.   Your child will need to bring this in a bag which will stay in their lockers. Forest school kits will be sent home at the end of each term for cleaning. 
Please ensure all clothing and footwear for PE and Forest School is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Times tables
Part of the year 2 Maths curriculum is to learn times tables. This is important learning as the children move through their education journey. We have started to look at the 10 times tables and will be moving onto the 5’s and 2’s over the next few weeks. I will be introducing them to tt-rockstars which supports times table practice and will send home more information about this once they have started this in school. 

Science 
Our Science topic this term is about habitats. The children will be exploring woodland, ocean and rainforest habitats. During this they will be learning how to read and make food chains. Next term we will be exploring microhabitats. 

History and Geography
History and Geography will be taught every other term. This term we will be focusing on our History learning and exploring how we learnt to fly. The children will be learning about people and events in History which transformed flight. 
Next term our Geography learning will help to answer the question ‘Would you prefer to live in a hot or cold place?’ In this topic the children will learn how to locate different continents on a map. They will also investigate the weather and recognise features of hot and cold places. 

Homework 
Homework in year 2 has a focus on reading practice. We will also be asking the children to go onto tt rockstars in a couple of weeks. Spelling or Phonics homework will be sent home each Friday. Please return this on Wednesday.
